Its the FSX at the core but Lockheed has fixed so many issues with the programming of FSX that its superior to old FSX and even the Steam version.

Microsoft sold the rights to Lockheed Martin to develop a non entertainment license flight simulator, which they called Prepar3d.
Prepar3d is basically the successor to FSX. You can safely dip your toes in the flight simulation water and if you decide you like it you can perhaps expand your horizons with XP or P3D at a later date.Īs I said, if you're a gamer venturing into the daunting world of flight simulation, don't try and run before you can walk.

Most of the huge selection of FSX third party addons will work with FSX Steam Edition so you have plenty of options to expand your simulator beyond the stock software. If you pick it up during a Steam sale it will be very cheap. I would recommend FSX, and in particular FSX Steam Edition. The UI can be pretty cryptic for those unfamiliar with flight sims and unlike FSX there are no tutorials or flying lessons included. I would also advise against X-Plane 10 as it isn't really friendly for new flight simmers. This is the most expensive route to go down and will have you trying to run before you can walk. If you are a gamer, and not a hardcore flight simmer, I'd advise you to ignore the advice of going for P3D.
